Before

• Always inspect the wheel

• Always handle and store in a careful manner

• Always check mounting flanges for equal size and minimum diameter of ⅓″ roper flanges

• Always check machine speed against the established maximum safe operating speed marked on the wheel

• Always use mounting blotters when supplied with wheels

• Always make sure work rest is properly adjusted (center of wheel or above - no more than ⅛″ away from wheel)

DURING

• Always use a safety guard covering at least one half of the grinding wheel

• Always allow newly mounted wheels to run at operating speed with guard in place for at least one minute before grinding

• Always wear safety glasses or some type of eye protection when grinding

• Always turn off coolant before stopping wheel to avoid creating an out-of-balance condition

AFTER

• Always store wheel in a dry place at a constant temperature

• Always provide proper racks, bins, or drawers for storing various types of wheels

• Always store straight and tapered wheel on edge in racks with two-point cradle support and partitions separating wheels

• Always use flat shelf for storing thin wheels with resin bond laying them flag to prevent warping

• Always stack cylinder wheels and large straight cup wheels with corrugated paper cushions between flat sides or in same type rack used for large straight wheels

• Always stack large flaring cups wheels on flat shelf face-to-face and base-to-base

• Always use bins, boxes, or drawers to store internal wheels, cups, and other small wheels

• Always use a guard

• Always wear eye protection

• Always comply with ANSI B7.1 and OSHA regulations

• Never exceed maximum safe speed marked on wheel

• Never use a cracked wheel or one that been dropped or damaged

• Never force a wheel onto the machine or alter the size of the mounting hole

• Never jam work into the wheel

• Never roll abrasive wheels across a surface

• Never force grinding so that the motor slows noticeably or work gets hot

• Never store wheels in a damp place or in extreme temperatures

• Never store wheel directly on edge with only one point touching shelf or without guard to prevent rolling

• Never handle wheels carelessly - wheels are brittle and break easily - never bump or drop wheels against one another or other objects

• Never pile heavy objects on top of wheels

• Never use mounting flanges unless they are ⅓ the diameter of the wheel and are clean, flat, and free of burns

• Never over-tighten the mounting nut excessively

• Never grind the side of the wheel (see ANSI safety code B7.1 for exceptions)

• Never start the machine until the wheel guard is in place

• Never stand directly in front of a grinding wheel whenever a grinder is started

GRINDING WHEELS IMPROPERLY USED ARE DANGEROUS. FAILURE TO OBSERVE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS MAY RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY.
